Reproduction of the White Sturgeon
Sturgeon reproduce in an extremely simple way. During spring the female sturgeon become full of eggs which need to be fertilized so they travel to find a calm, cool water river or lake with a smooth and flat bottom which can hold the eggs. After finding the perfect location for reproduction the eggs are laid on the lake or river bed as they away fertilization. Once the eggs are laid on the river bed or lake bed the mother moves on and a male will come along and spray his fertilizer over the eggs. After much development the surviving eggs will hatch and a fish nearly 3 or 4 inches in length will be born. Very rarely do a large amount of the eggs make it due to the constant threat of other fish and crayfish which like to feed on the eggs which are not hidden in a nest but left out in the open. Most of the reproduction of white sturgeon occurs in state sponsored fisheries due to the lack of prevalence in the wild due to poaching for white sturgeon caviar and the abundance of natural predators.
